Razer's AI Companion Is a Desk Hologram, Not a Girlfriend
Razer Project Ava is a 5.5-inch holographic companion that sits on your desk, watches your screen and talks back. It's a gaming wingman, not a...
Eight roleplay platforms, ranked by what they do after the first ten messages. Free limits, paid tiers, memory failures and the privacy caveats nobody puts on the pricing page.
Most AI roleplay reviews test the first five minutes. That's the easy part. Every platform on this list will give you a decent opening scene. The differences show up around message twenty, when the bot forgets your character's name, or when the filter trips on the knife you wrote into a thriller.
We went through eight platforms: pricing pages, privacy policies, user complaints, and enough hands-on chat to know where each one breaks. No platform paid for a spot here.

If you want the short version: start free on JanitorAI or SpicyChat. Pay for Secrets AI or OurDream only when memory, images or voice start mattering.
Under the interface, every one of these platforms does the same thing. It feeds the model a context window: your character card, the recent messages, and whatever the site decides to keep. When the window fills, older material gets dropped. That's why your bot forgets the scar on your character's hand but remembers what you said two messages ago.
Two other things shape a session. The system prompt, which the site controls and you mostly don't. And the moderation layer, which can cut in mid-scene and turn a tense interrogation into a customer service reply.
Most free bots run in the browser. Nothing to install.
JanitorAI gives you the full site for free, no credit card. That's rare, and it's why it's the default recommendation for people who just want to write.
Janitor+ costs $12.99/month and launched June 2026. It adds five times the context and priority messages. Five times matters if you run long arcs; the free window runs out faster than you'd think.
The trade: no images and no voice. And after an April 2026 model swap, users complained about repetition. Bots looping the same phrasing, same gestures. Worth knowing before you build a hundred-message story on top of it.
We rate JanitorAI โ out of 10.
SpicyChat runs in the browser and on Android, free chat with a queue at busy times. The library is the draw: thousands of community bots across every genre people actually write in.
Tiers run $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95/month, raised September 8, 2026. On the lower tiers, users report memory fading after 15โ20 messages. That's not a bug you can prompt your way around. If you need continuity, you're paying for the higher tier or picking a different platform.
We rate SpicyChat โ out of 10.
Character.AI is free with ads, $9.99/month for c.ai+, and it has the best mobile apps of the group on iOS and Android. For fandom bots and SFW storytelling, it works.
The filter blocks adult content, and it doesn't stop at sex. It interrupts crime and thriller plots. Write a detective scene with a body in it and watch the bot pivot to asking if you're okay.
Character.AI banned under-18 open-ended chat in November 2025 and added ID and selfie checks in 2026. If you're an adult who wants adult material, this isn't the platform. We cover the wider rules in AI Companion Laws: What's Actually Enforceable in 2026.

Secrets AI is the one to look at if your story runs for weeks. Free tier gives you 20 messages a day. Premium is $19.99/month or $109.99/year, and includes 8,000 Moments credits for images, video and voice.
Ultimate is $39.99/month and unlocks Lorebooks, group chats with two or three characters, and personas. Lorebooks are the real tool here: you store facts about your world and the bot pulls them back when relevant, instead of hoping the context window holds.
Caveats: the best tools sit on Ultimate, there's no free image generation, and credits don't roll over. Use them or lose them each month.
We rate Secrets AI 9.9 out of 10.
OurDream Premium is $19.99/month, or $9.99/month billed yearly. You get unlimited messages and 1,000 dreamcoins a month, roughly 200 images.
Group scenes are the reason to be here. Multiple characters in one conversation, plus image and video generation when you want to see the scene instead of reading it.
Two things to know. Memory leans on recent messages, so long arcs fade. And saved images get blurred if you stop paying. Your gallery is a subscription feature, not an archive.
We rate OurDream AI 9.7 out of 10.
CrushOn starts at $5.99/month and climbs to $199.99/month. Read that ladder before you subscribe to anything.
The site advertises 9,200+ characters, 22 genres and sessions running hundreds of messages. Those are vendor claims we haven't verified. Adult content requires a paid tier, so the free option is thinner than it looks.
We rate CrushOn โ out of 10.
Talkie holds 4.5 stars from about 797,000 Google Play reviews. Free with ads, Talkie+ at $9.99/month. It's built for short sessions on a phone, not long fiction.
The top 1-star complaint is memory loss, and gem credits drain fast once you start using extras. Fine for a commute. Not where you write a novel.
We rate Talkie โ out of 10.
Candy.ai Premium is $13.99/month or $3.99/month billed yearly. The free plan gives you five messages and 100 token credits a month. Five messages is a demo, not a trial.
The photo side is the selling point. The complaint we kept finding: storylines reportedly reset after a few days, and credits run out before you expect. If you want a bot with a face and you're not running an epic, it's cheap. If you want continuity, look elsewhere.
We rate Candy.ai 9.8 out of 10.
Free isn't free in the same way anywhere. Secrets AI caps you at 20 messages a day. OurDream charges a coin per message. Candy gives you five messages and calls it a plan. JanitorAI is the closest thing to unlimited free roleplay. SpicyChat is free but queues you at busy times. Character.AI and Talkie run ads.
If you're testing platforms, use the free tiers for a week each before you pay. You'll learn more from message twenty on a free plan than from any pricing table.
The bot is only as consistent as the card you write. Three things help:
If you'd rather start from something written for you, browse the Nusrat profile or create your own AI girlfriend with your own card.
JanitorAI, SpicyChat, Secrets AI, OurDream, CrushOn and Candy.ai all host adult material behind an 18+ gate. All of them ban content involving minors. That line is universal and enforced.
Privacy is where the marketing gets thin. No platform on this list offers true end-to-end encryption. Several may train on your chats. OurDream runs Automod, which scans chat logs. Moderation filters on several sites read what you write.
What to do: keep real names, addresses and job details out of your stories. Use a separate email. Use a private browser window. Treat every chat as something a moderator could read, because on some platforms it is.
Start free on JanitorAI if you want story-first roleplay with the fewest walls, or SpicyChat if you want the biggest library and can live with a queue. Character.AI is fine for clean fandom stories, if you can tolerate the filter and the age checks. Pay for Secrets AI when memory and lorebooks matter, and OurDream when you want images, video and group scenes.
Everything else is a compromise on price, memory or both.
JanitorAI is the strongest free pick for story-first roleplay. SpicyChat has the biggest character library, Character.AI is best for SFW fandom stories, and Secrets AI is the one to pay for if you need long arcs with real memory.
JanitorAI comes closest, since the full site is free with no credit card. Every other platform uses something: queues at busy times, ads, daily message caps, or credits per message.
Usually the context window filled up and older messages got dropped, or a moderation filter cut in. Restate the key facts plainly, use a lorebook if the platform has one, or rewind to an earlier message and continue from there.
Not fully. No platform on this list offers true end-to-end encryption, moderation systems like OurDream's Automod scan chat logs, and several sites may train on your conversations. Keep personal details out of your stories.
Real conversations, generated photos and voice notes from companions who show up as close as your zip code. Nobody needs your real name.
